The paucity of new policy in Jim Chalmers’ fourth budget raises the question whether the Albanese government has given up the fight on the so-called housing crisis.
Worse, in a budget with weak new initiatives on housing, one proposal – “cracking down on foreign land banking” – would actually reduce the timing, and quantity, of new home building.
Of course, Prime Minister Albanese and his team don’t think they’ve given up.
“Building new homes” is one of the budget’s “five main priorities” and is backed by a $33 billion war chest to help deliver the now impossibly ambitious target of 1.2 million new homes by the end of decade.
